The Importance of Academic Success as You Embark Upon Your College Career

As you embark on your journey through college you must take into account your academic success. By working hard, staying focused, and at the same time enjoying all the things UCF's campus has to offer, you will make your college experience worthwhile. You are on your own now and you must make your own decisions. Remember you get out of your college experience what you put into it.

Below is a guide to academic success in college:

  1. Manage Your Time
    • Timing is always of essence. It is important to have a planner to write down all assignments in order to be on track with all your classes. It is good to plan out each hour of the day so that you won't feel that your day is wasted. In addition, it is important to have a four year plan of courses you are going to take so that you won't get delayed in the end.
  2. Study Time
    • In college, students are prone to procrastinate. By setting time for studying you become more self accountable. The more you study, the higher your grades will be. Also, it is important to find your study habits and learning style, whether it be by yourself or in groups. Whether you are a note-taker or a good listener.
  3. Use Your Resources
    • By being aware of the different resources on campus, you will have a better handle on things
    • Make sure you visit your academic advisor at least two or three times a semester
    • Use SARC and SI, to help you if you have trouble with a subject.
    • In addition, events are offered at the University Counseling Center in order to facilitate students in any problems such as test anxiety, fear of public speaking, and stress. Career Services can help with your career development
  4. Everything in Moderation
    • Your social experiences should not interfere with your academic success
    • It is good to have fun but all within balance. It is important to keep focused and at the same time have fun. Remember, your decisions affect what you do later on.
  5. Get Involved
    • Getting involved in extracurricular activities is important. It helps you release stress and keeps you busy so that you won't get distracted by other things. It also looks good on your résumé. It is good for networking and meeting people. You have to think: "what do I want to leave behind"? or "how do I want people to remember me"?
