Knight Glossary

Academic Advisor: staff or faculty that provides academic advising for students. They also promote student development and success by helping students identify, define, and achieve their academic goals.

Academic Services: This office is located in 210 Millican Hall and assist students with questions on late add. Late withdrawal, and medical withdrawal.

Academic Syllabus: communicates course expectations and requirements, provides a central reference point for students, presents a clear course plan, sets the tone for the course.

Accelerated Student: first-time in college students entering the University with at least 45 credit hours earned by the beginning of the fall semester. These students will be advised by the Sophomore and Second Year Center.

Add/Drop: students may make any adjustments to their academic schedule through the first Friday of each semester. These changes in schedule will not be reflected on the degree audit and there is no additional charge for making changes to your schedule through this time period.

ASSA: (Academic Services for Student- Athletes) works in collaboration with the athletic department and University offices to achieve their personal, academic, and career planning goals. It assists student athletes in their effort to maintain a balance by participation in the NCAA Champs Life Skills program.

Bachelor of Arts: is an undergraduate bachelor's degree awarded for students completing a degree program. Most Bachelor of Arts programs include a Foreign Language component.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: is the standard undergraduate degree for students seeking a professional education in the visual or performing arts.

Bachelor of Music: is an undergraduate academic degree awarded for courses taken in the study of Music.

Bachelor of Science: is an undergraduate academic degree awarded completing a degree program and generally do not require a Foreign Language component. There are exceptions like the Bachelor of Science in Psychology which require one year of a foreign language.

CAH: College of Arts and Humanities

CAP: (College Achievement Program) this is a student success program designed to meet the academic needs of freshmen students entering the University of Central Florida with test scores below the state required minimum; that are required to take college preparatory courses.

CECS: College of Engineering and Computer Science

Certificate: provides an interdisciplinary focus to an existing program of study to provide more depth and understanding to enhance the graduate program.

Change of Major: students are free to change their major upon consultation with an academic advisor. Change of major forms are found in the Registrar's Office and academic advising offices.

CLAST: (College Level Academic Skills Test) is an achievement test that measures communication and mathematics skills in four subtests: Essay, English Language Skills, Reading and Mathematics. It is required by the state of Florida that all students seeking an Associate of Arts or Baccalaureate degree from UCF satisfy the CLAST requirement.

COB: College of Business

COE: College of Education

College: a term used to denote an area of study within the University setting. For example, your major is accounting and you are a student in the College of Business.

Consent of Instructor: Some classes may contain C.I., which indicates that you may have to consult with the instructor before signing up for the class.

COPHA: College of Health and Public Affairs

COS: College of Science

Credit Hour: credit given for attending one lecture hour of class each week for 15 weeks. Most college classes are three credit hours.

Degree audit: An official document of the University denoted the plan of study for a specific major. A student can find a copy of their degree audit through MyUCF. This document outlines the specific course required for the major.

Electives: a term used for an academic course chosen by the student from a set of options, as opposed to a required course.

Enrollment Appointment: student's opportunity to register for courses for that particular term. It is available through myUCF at http://my.ucf.edu. To obtain the appointment time, log onto myUCF and click "Student Self Service" within the "myUCF Menu" pagelet. On resulting menu page, go to "Student Center". On the new page look for box entitled "Enrollment Appointments" on the right side of the page. A list of terms for which you are eligible to enroll will appear. Your enrollment appointment is different than your advising appointment with your academic advisor.

EXCEL: is an NSF funded program at UCF, geared towards incoming UCF freshmen. The mission is to increase student success in the first two years of their college career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) discipline.

Freshman: a student who has completed less than 30 hours of college credit.

FTIC: First Time in College Student

Full Time Status: twelve or more credit hours per semester for undergraduate students.

FYAE: (First Year Advising and Exploration) a program that helps students transition to college and help develop positive university experiences by providing quality advising programs in order to facilitate student success and enhance student retention.

Grade Forgiveness: UCF students are afforded the opportunity to repeat a course using grade forgiveness. The student must complete the Grade Forgiveness form and return to the Registrar's Office by the first Friday of the term in which they wish to use grade forgiveness. Once the course is completed, the new grade will be calculated in the gpa and the old grade removed from the gpa. Grade Forgiveness can only be used for the same course in which the student is seeking to repeat the course.

Graduate: someone who has been awarded am advanced degree by the University.

General Education Program: is a program for students to take in a broad range of human knowledge and intellectual pursuits, to equip them with the analytic and expressive skills required to engage in those pursuits, to develop their ability to think critically, and to prepare them for life-long learning. The foundations of UCF's General Education Program that must be met, include courses in communications, history, mathematics, and the physical and social sciences.

Junior: a student who has completed 60-89 college credit hours.

Knight Success Program: offered to select first year students. Presents specialized programs and advising that addresses the main concerns facing freshmen students. Students are given the opportunity to explore their strengths, set their goals and goal plans, and receive help in connecting to resources on campus and beyond that can enrich their academic experience.

Limited Access: Some of the majors offered here at UCF are limited access, therefore, a limited number of students will be admitted into this program. A separate application, portfolio or audition is required to be admitted into the program.

Major: a student's concentrated field of study.

MASS: (Multicultural Academic and Support Services) program to promote and enhance student persistence and success throughout the University by providing academic advising, as well as academic support services and programs to increase the retention of Multicultural and First generation College Students.

Minor: a student's secondary field of study.

MyUCF: http://my.ucf.edu is where you can access important information on classes using your PID. You can access online registration, class schedule, add/drop of classes, viewing your grades, financial statements.

NID: (Network Identification Number) key to accessing the UCF computer network, the internet, the library, and world of cyber information. This is also generated when you come to UCF for the first time. You need to also obtain a password.

Pegasus Success Program: a limited access, specialized 6-week program offered to select students that begins summer B each year and is designed to assist students achieve their academic goals. Full-time enrollment in fall is based on the performance and completion of the program.

PID: (Personal Identification Number) the key to accessing online registration, class schedule searches, adding or dropping classes, and many other functions, including viewing your grades and fee schedule. You may be asked to select a password when given your PID (Ex: r2546777)

Preferred Class: generally a class the department encourages the student to take, but is not necessarily required for the major.

Pre-requisite: A course that must be taken prior to enrollment in another course.

Required Class: is a class that is necessary to take.

Restricted Access Major: Some majors offered here at UCF require that you complete Core courses and GEP courses successfully before you can be admitted into the program of study. The majors in the College of Business and Education are restricted majors.

Restrictive Electives: certain electives that are within your major. Consult your advisor before signing upand your enrollment appointment opens.

SARC: (Student Academic Resource Center) provides high-quality academic support programs, including tutoring and supplemental instruction, retention programs, academic advising programs, and various other academic programs and services.

School: specified majors within the University. UCF has two schools, The Rosen School of Hospitality and the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences.

SDS: Student Disability Services

Senior: a student who has completed 90 or more hours of college credit but has not received a bachelor's degree.

SOAR: (Seizing Opportunities for Achievement and Retention) provides access to UCF and offers developmental academic support services to program participants. It is a six-week summer residential program that builds and upgrades the writing, verbal, and study skills necessary for success in college. It fosters student success and retention.

Sophomore: a student who has completed 30-59 hours of college credit.

SSYC: (Sophomore and Second Year Center) program to help guide second years and sophomores towards declaration of a major and eventual graduation from UCF, and connecting students to appropriate campus resources and services.

STEP: (Supporting Teacher Education Pre-professionals) Students admitted into this program at the time of admission have selected Education as their field of study.

Student Disability Services: students who have a documented learning difference are strongly encouraged to register with the Student Disability Services Office before classes begin. Accommodations can be provided for students who have registered with this office.

Undergraduate: is post secondary education up to the level of bachelor's degree.

Withdrawal: a student can withdraw from a class up to a certain time period in the semester. Students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor prior to this deadline to discuss the reasons of withdrawing from a class. The exact withdrawal deadline can be found on the Registrar's website.

World Wide Web course: class instruction taught via the web rather than the traditional class setting.
