Preparation for Orientation and College
How to prepare for your summer orientation program:
- Complete the Math placement exam at least one week prior
to attending orientation. If your major requires Chemistry,
please take this exam at least one week prior to your
orientation program.
- Familiarize yourself with MyUCF. You will be using MyUCF
during the course registration on Day 2 of orientation.
This also includes information on searching for appropriate
classes for your course of study.
- Memorize your PID (Personal Identification) and your NID
(Network Identification).
- Contact your high school so that your final high school
transcript is sent to the UCF Undergraduate Admissions Office.
If this document is not received by Undergraduate Admissions,
it may prevent you from registering for your spring classes
during the fall semester.
- If you are anticipating receiving any form of college credit
through AP, IB, AICE or dual enrollment, make sure that this
documentation is sent to the Undergraduate Admission Office.
Dual enrollment credit must be sent from the community college
or institution that is conferring the credit.
- Complete the Immunization forms required by the Student Health
Services Office. Failure to complete the necessary forms may
prevent you from registering for your classes during orientation.
- Familiarize yourself with your major requirements for your
intended major. Suggested four-year plans can be found on
the UCF Undergraduate Catalog (also available online).
- Prepare an ideal schedule for your summer and/or fall semesters.
Make sure you take into account work, travel and family schedules.
First time in college students should take a minimum of 12 credit
hours (full-time status) to 15 credit hours in their first semester(fall).
When you are finalizing your schedule during orientation, your
academic advisor will approve of your plan of study. A student cannot
register for classes at orientation until they have approval from
the academic advisor.
- Review the class offerings available through MyUCF. Please know
that all class seats may not appear to be open when you are reviewing
the site. We open new seats in classes at each orientation. If you
are attending an orientation program later in the summer, we continue
to open new seats through the last orientation in August.
During summer orientation:
- Attend all orientation programs during the two-day event. The
information presented during orientation will assist you in your
transition to college.
- You will be advised with your assigned advising office during
orientation. It is important that you have their contact information
should you have any questions after you leave orientation.
- Be flexible when considering your academic schedule. You may not have
the "ideal" schedule after you leave orientation, but you
can make changes to your schedule through the first week of classes.
Any changes to your schedule should be verified by your advising office.
- Ask questions! This is your opportunity to gain a better understanding
of what your college experience will be like.
- Understand and remember the importance of add/drop, withdrawing from a
class, and grade forgiveness.
After you leave orientation:
- Review your schedule so that you are meeting major and general
education requirements.
- Review your schedule and order your textbooks on-line through the University Bookstore.
- Contact your assigned advising office if you wish to make changes
to your schedule.
- Contact your assigned advising office once you receive your AP, IB,
and Dual enrollment or AICE results. You may have to adjust your
schedule based on these results.
- Review your student planner so that you are aware of important dates.
These dates should include:
- add/drop
- withdrawing from a class
- Family weekend
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving break
- final exams
